Effect of the Telegraph on Society
Introduction
Telegraph is defined as a setup for communication at a distance through coded signals. Probably, the current generation might not understand how long it used to take letters to be delivered in the olden days. However, the truth of the matter is that prior to the introduction of telegraph, there was low –speed communication because the system used to send the letters were extremely slow (Yates 149). On the contrary, it is easier for the current generation to underestimate the distance between cities or countries since there is high-speed communication. For example, where it used to take months to deliver a message, only a few hours could be spent to pass the information from one point to the other via a telegraph network. As mentioned before, telegraph reduced the duration that a given message or information could be passed from one area to the other, and this means that time value for communication improved the business operations (Yates 153). Among the benefits that telegraph had on the growth of economy, include the following. First, it caused an expansion in the market area. The latter is defined as an area upon which goods can be purchased and sold when market forces are in action. Upon its introduction, market participants in various parts of any given country could freely interact almost instantaneously for the purposes of gathering information and make appropriate transactions. In as much as market area was expanded, one fact that remains clear is that telegraph proved to be more expensive per word when a comparison is made with letters, but overall, the communication was made less
