In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece of literature “The Great Gatsby”, the eponymous character is shown to be an eccentric man with a shrouded past, which only becomes revealed to the reader in the final third portion of the book. Through his past, and many other subtleties laced into the book by Fitzgerald, it is heavily hinted at that Gatsby himself is African-American, being pale enough to pass as a white man in West Egg. The inklings of this idea are planted through this novel, both overt and symbolic, such as the geography laid out by Fitzgerald and characters’ placement in that, character interactions between Gatsby and harsh racists like Tom Buchanan, and Gatsby’s past that got him to West Egg and found him his fortune. Gatsby being black was a very hidden yet powerful statement by Fitzgerald on the upward mobility of African-Americans during the 1920’s when racism and racial violence were becoming extremely prevalent, and the lengths these people had to go to to achieve that mobility, with no guaranteed success.

Nick seems to be the most content with himself during the whole novel unlike the others. He affects the overall style of the story because he is a lot different and relatable compared to the other characters, so the reader can use him in comparison to Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. Nick is often used by everyone in the novel as the middle man. They always happened to put him in the middle of all there rich people problems. "I'm going to to call up Daisy to-morrow and invite her over here to tea."(82).

Tom Buchanan is most responsible for Gatsby death because he told George Wilson that Gatsby was the one that killed Myrtle but Gatsby wasn’t even behind the wheel and also he wanted to target Gatsby because his wife Daisy and Gatsby were acting suspicious together. In Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are two characters by the names of Tom Buchanan and George Wilson. Throughout the book, these two particular characters seem to be very different from each other in nearly every way. However, it becomes clear as the story continues that they share some ideas and attitudes in common. Tom forgot to tell George that because him and Daisy were plotting this out. I could tell something was up when Nick refers that “Tom and Daisy talking in the house(146). I also think that Daisy is a little bit responsible because she took on some bad morals when she hit Myrtle because she could have stopped the car after she hit Myrtle.

In the court of law there’s only one person who was responsible and guilty for the murder of Jay Gatsby. Although in the eyes of god there was more than one person responsible for the murder or had the ability to stop the outcome of the murder. Weather it was Tom being honest about his affair, Daisy doing the right thing and stopping during the accident or Jay Gatsby himself by taking control of the situation and doing what was good for both Daisy and himself instead of just what 's best for Daisy. Tom, Myrtle, Daisy, and Gatsby were selfish and self centered leading them to become Morally responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby.
Nick Carraway’s passive nature leads to the many mishaps in the novel, which stresses the idea that not being evil does not necessarily make someone a good person. “I’m inclined to reserve all judgements” (1) Nick states at the beginning of the novel, which instantly sets up his passivity. His passiveness sparks complications early on, such as when Tom takes Nick to meet Myrtle in secret. Nick tags along because he “had nothing better to do” (24) and seems to have little qualms about the fact that Tom is cheating on Daisy openly. As Daisy’s cousin, it is expected that he stands against Tom’s infidelity.

He leaves the two alone after realizing that they are so entranced with each other. Another example is when Nick kept all of his thoughts about the affair to himself. If he would have told Daisy, many of the problems would have been resolved. She would leave Tom for Gatsby. Then Tom could be with Myrtle instead of her tragically dying outside her husband’s shop.
His affair becomes apparent in chapter 2 when Nick states that he “met Tom Buchanan’s mistress” (Ch 2). This is a grand form of deception, as he is married to Daisy but is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, another married woman.
