" The Great Gatsby " is set during the 1920s and is based on is wife Zelda Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby captures love in its many forms from its selfishness to its most hopeful moments. This novel portrays so many lessons about life and how love can make you do crazy things. In this novel, Tom and Gatsby who come from two total different backgrounds compete for the love of their life. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates tension between Tom ad Gatsby because of how different they are.

Tom and Gatsby both love Daisy, but only one of them can have her. In chapter 7, Gatsby says, " Just tell him the truth, that you never loved him." Gatsby was trying to make Daisy say something when he did not even know if she really did love him or not. While all this is going on Tom starts to get mad, but he is still having an affair with Myrtle Wilson so its obvious he does not care about Daisy's feelings. Daisy would be better off with Gatsby because he actually cares about her and makes sure he shows it. Tom makes it like he does not care about Daisy and their marriage until he finds out that Gatsby and Daisy love each other. Tom's background is the total opposite from Gatsby's. Tom comes from a wealthy family unlike Gatsby who lied about his background and Tom even hired someone to investigate Gatsby so he could catch him in his lie. Tom is nosey, rude, racist, and a hypocrite. During the novel, Tom has an affair with Myrtle Wilson and he shows her off and even brings Nick to meet her which was really weird because that's Daisy's cousin so why would Tom want Nick to know about her.
