Many characters during The Chrysalids change or try to change Waknuk and how it runs its society. These main people are Joseph Strorm, the Inspector, and Uncle Axel. Each person has his own way that he is trying to change Waknuk and make it what they think will be better. They change it in positive or negative ways and here is how they do it. Uncle Axel influenced David Strorm often during The Chrysalids in many ways. He first showed he did not agree with what the society when he overheard David talking to Rosalind Morton out loud but Rosalind was not there. Uncle Axel learned the truth about David’s telepathic abilities and the group he still kept it a secret. Another major way Uncle Axel helped David was by educating him about the world outside of Waknuk. Uncle Axel also showed supreme loyalty to the telepathic group when he killed Alan Ervin who was a danger to the group because he possibly knew their secret. His role in the book is Waknuk town magistrate and he is a very strong religious leader. His job is searching for deviations in any crops, plants, animals, and humans. Joseph is very successful in changing Waknuk society but that changes when he realizes some people are deviations on the inside. Joseph is a very strong because he cares more about having a pure town than about his own family.
