How has your socialization been benefited by attending schools?
I come from a big family of seven siblings, so my social skills were developing before attending school. Before attending school I had to learn to share, take turns, manners, respect others, and clean up after myself. To help increase my social skills outside of my siblings and cousins, my mom had us do play dates with other children that were close to our ages. In addition during the summer time my mom took us to the park, the public pool and enrolled us in activities at the public library.
Attending school in a small town did benefit my social skills, because they class sizes were smaller. My mom told me that I was shy and needed time to warm up to people I didn’t know. This forced me to come out of my “shell” to interact with more people. Even though I was shy, I was still able to verbally communicate when I needed to. In my report cards my teachers commented saying that I was willing to socialize more in small groups rather than big groups. I knew how to follow my teacher’s instructions and behaved appropriately in the classroom and on the playground. Students need to feel that they are being accepted and not judged by their classmates or teacher before they are willing to socialize with others. Educators and parents need to teach students that not all students are the same and that is okay. The more they interact with students they might find something that they have in common with each other and this can create a friendship. Students still need to learn that they will need to create respectful relationships with people that they have nothing in common with or differences of
