Book Buddies: Interaction Among Middle School Students

Through my nine years at ESK I have had many experiences that i most likely wouldn't have had if i had gone to any other school. One of these experiences was book buddies. Book Buddies provided an opportunity for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to read with the younger kids and create a bond with children that are younger than you. In this letter I will be discussing how the 8th grade students interacting with the younger students at ESK can not only help the younger kids it may help us as well. Kids in grades JK-5th are learning many things such as math, science, and literature, but another tremendous thing that they are learning in school is social skills. They are learning how to pick up social cues from the people around them, and how not to bite someone when you get mad at them, but most of all they learn how to have relationships with people whether that be bad or good relationships. The social skills you learn in your younger years will affect you for the rest of your life. Many people never have the opportunity to interact with children as teenagers, and i think that it is ridiculous because quite a few people's first interaction with children is when they have their own little baby children. This can cause many problems in the relationship between the parent and child. I think we can agree on the fact that 8th graders at times can be “obnoxious and immature” and at times we can act like we are too cool to be around little kids, incredible role models for the younger students. The teachers have put some much faith into the Eighth graders such as lower school field day, and more independence on the trips we take, and I don't think that the eighth graders have let you down so
