The digital revolution is understood to have emerged within the later half of the twentieth century when inventions and advancements in communication and commuting flourished. This revolution follows the Industrial Revolution and the Second Industrial Revolution, which both resulted in wealth for some, but also poverty and hardships for many who lost their jobs to mechanization. Overall, these were all part of a constantly changing way of life for Americans in the twentieth century, and once the 1980’s hit, the major shift from traditional industry to a digital revolution completely altered their way of life once again. Pornography, personal privacy, and plagiarism and cheating are only a few examples of the many ways that our society today has been negatively impacted by the negatives of technology. The ability to search anything on the internet has led to an increase in young children accessing inappropriate information that is leading to them participating in activities including drugs, alcohol and sex when they potentially shouldn’t even know what these things are yet. This will result in these kids getting in trouble with their parents and the law at a much younger age than in previous generations. Secondly, the debate over personal privacy has been discussed in the media a lot recently. It is proven that “Thanks to the efficiency of the internet and automated systems, productivity and GDP have grown during the last few decades, but the middle class and jobs are disappearing,” (Thompson). Also, the evolution of smart phones, computers and household appliances we have become dependant on the technology around us to survive. No longer can we go anywhere without our phones, cook anything without some sort of appliance, or live comfortably without air conditioning and electricity. These are only a few examples of how technology has impacted our lives, but there are many more. Also, as younger generations grow up with easier access to cellphones and computers, they also are rapidly losing their ability to communicate effectively face to face with other people and adults. It has become easier for them to hide behind the screens of technology than to form real relationships with the people around them. This is harming them as they grow older and are unable to communicate effectively with adults while interviewing for a job, while addressing an issue with a teacher or a coach, and even as simple as making a bad impression when meeting your friends parents.
