College brings a level of freedom students aren’t prepared to handle. Nobody will hold your hand. You’re on your own. These were the remarks I had heard about college. It is the next monumental, nerve-wracking adventure in your life. These phrases along with the two experiences detailed below shaped my understanding and approach to college. College, through enhanced personal freedom and more significant decision making, acts as a practice test for adulthood. Essentially, adulthood is given a trial run.
On the eve of my first day as a part-time PSEO student, all the anxieties I had been told about college were running rampant through my mind. People involved in college were in no way there to hold your hand. This had become indisputably clear. After contemplating this briefly, I found this empowering. I found this invigorating. I was no longer being coddled. I had the freedom to ruin my academic career. I also had the freedom to thrive in my new environment in a way that was previously impossible. This experience more than any other taught me about the planning, resourcefulness, and independence college demands in order to succeed. Consequently, I realized the skills of planning, resourcefulness and independence are not unique to college, but a fundamental aspect to living a successful live during adulthood. Another short story which shaped my view on college came later into my junior year when my sister Jessica visited during winter break after her first semester in college.
