Atticus raised his children to be bold, speak their minds, be kind, and be respectful of other people's opinions, especially when they don’t agree with yours. Atticus Finch is more than the role of a dad, he’s an excellent dad, he teaches Scout and Jem all the perspectives and views of other people's lives and their life. [To kill a mockingbird by Harper lee, The father in the book Atticus Finch has two children, Jean Louise Finch, also known as scout and Jem. He raises them to be strong and independent but has sympathy for others. Atticus Finch is a good father. His kids respect him and anyone that knows him. Jem sees that and when Atticus and Jem start talking about how it was unfair Atticus agrees with Jem saying “No son, it’s not right.” (lee 284). It wasn’t right how the jury had blamed Tom Robinson for the charge of rape and accused him of beating her, the leader of the church, Reverend Skyes even agreed “I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a Whiteman.” (lee 279). Talking to Reverend Jem opened his eyes a little bit that day, truly seeing what was going on vs what he thought was happening. Back then, nobody couldn’t say that about anyone and mean it. Going back to the Tom Robinson case we find out that the dad of Mayella put those bruises and scars on her, and not Tom Robinson. Also finding out her father had beaten her, for being around a colored man. More evidence showed that Mayella’s father sexually abused her. Now, I don't know about you but throughout our learning about Atticus and his kids, Attius has never once hit or touched his Children in such a crude manner. People around him even say “If your father is anything he's civilized in his heart.” (lee 62). To be civilized in his heart seems like a high honor, it means Atticus is polite and sophisticated. He’ll protect his family and friends if he has to. No matter if he might even die, he’ll do it “You can turn around and go home Walter” (lee 151). Atticus protects his family, and his clients even when he knows he might get hurt because he also knows no one else will.
