Frederick Douglass had a tough and hard life. Throughout his tough and hard life, he developed and showed characteristics that were of a great leader. They were, bravery, the ability to be cunning, and the ability to adapt. Frederick was once a Slave and later became free. as a little boy kill manhood he had a lot of, kind, cruel, and cunning Slave masters. through all this, he matured and later got his freedom. The first characteristic that showed his ability to be a great leader was bravery. On Page 58-59 of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglas had the chance to run away and he took it. Douglas is a very smart man. He shows this by learning how to read without his master's knowing. He states, “I finally succeeded in learning to read. When I was sent of errands, I always took my book with me, and by going one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return. I used also to carry bread with me, enough of which was always in the house, and to which I was always welcome; for I was much better off in this regard than many of the poor white children in our neighborhood. In order for you to be a good leader, you have to have the ability to adapt. Douglas displays this ability. Throughout this whole book Douglas Had to adapt to new masters and slave owner. For each one he tweaked his behavior so he can do his work with the least chance of getting Whipped. He stated, “ If, however, I found in my new home hardship, hunger, whipping, and nakedness, I had the consolation that I should not have escaped any one of them by staying.
