The novel Of Mice and Men poses a moral dilemma; is murder ever justified? Should George have murdered Lennie? George should have killed Lennie because worse things would have awaited him if he went to trial. George felt justified in killing Lennie because he felt he was saving him from a worse things.
In the book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, I believe that George did make the right decision to shoot Lennie, because of the relationship that they had. Previously learning from the experience Candy had when he let someone else shoot his dog, George knew that shooting Lennie was his job to do. In chapter three Candy says "I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn 't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog." , (John Steinbeck, 1973, p.58), this really impacted Georges decision on giving someone else the ability to shoot him.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, we are here for the trial of George Milton. George Milton is on trial for first degree murder of Lennie Small. Lennie Small was a strong young man that seemed to have trouble with memorizing and comprehending. George Milton shot Lennie Small. Lennie Small had murdered a co-workers wife, by breaking her neck.
In this essay I will be explaining why George was justified in shooting Lennie. You will read 3 reasons why I believe he is justified such as: Lennie wouldn’t have to face jail time, it would put Lennie out of his misery, and premeditation. To start off my essay I will begin with the reason of him not having to face jail time. Lennie wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box if you know what I mean so he didn’t really understand a lot.
However, George could have stood up for Lennie instead of killing him. There is other options other than immediately killing. Lennie was not very smart and George knew that, George was not thinking of Lennie he was thinking of himself. In the passage, Of Mice and Men, George says “He’s dumb as hell, but he ain’t crazy.” This shows that George knows that he is not stupid.
Michael Connelly’s book, The Overlook, is about a fictional homicide case fused with a terrorist threat. The main character, Harry Bosch, gets a call in the middle of night on a homicide case with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Upon his arrival at the scene, the victim is found on the overlook of his road with two bullets holes in the back of head. The forensics team discovers that the victim is, Stanley Kent. Stanley Kent was an oncologist who had access to radioactive substances when treating patients.
George killing Lennie and if it was justified or condemned is a very controversial discussion and could go either way. So think about these factors and ask yourself the question if what George did was justified or
Some people may argue that George should not
The main reason George killed Lennie is because Lennie would have killed somebody again. And the evidence is clearly there, the pet mice that he killed, the poor puppy that he accidently hit to hard, and especially Curley’s wife. He almost killed the girl in weed if he had gone any further. The sad thing is is that he doesn't know how strong he really is, nor does he know what he’s done wrong in the first place.
So George killing Lennie is wrong in multiple ways. “God gives people life, so only god has the right to take it away”. This is invalid because he did do the right thing. They could’ve ran off and been fugitives but there lives would have never been the same. No matter what they wouldn't have the life they planned.
To say this as kind as possible, George’s dreams were in an uncrackable safe and Lennie was the safe itself. Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, was my favorite story that I read this year. The characters were interesting and there wasn’t a lot of characters either, which I liked. I also enjoyed the plot twist at the end and probably wouldn’t have ever saw it coming if I didn’t have it spoiled for me.
On the other hand you can analyze the actions that George did and you can say that they were not very human decisions. George killed his best friend because Lennie killed a person and was going to get into more problems but nevertheless can not say that this is justified. George always told Lennie all the plans they had together, like buying a ranch, he was always keeping it with the expectation that they were going to stay together forever. This quote is an example of how Lennie and George looked happy in the future. "O.K. Someday- we 're gonna get the jack together and we 're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an ' a cow and some pigs..." (Steinbeck 7).
Some people might think in the opposite side that George should not killed Lennie because Lennie did not mean to anything. He has done it without knowing how strong of himself. Lennie made many troubles this might be because of his disability, but this is the reason that he deserves to live. He has done many thing that make George get into trouble and It is better if Lennie has to die because of George shoot him not the other. "All the time he coulda had such a good time if it was not for you” (Steinbeck).
George killing Lennie is justified. Lennie was either gonna get killed by the other men or George. The other men were only doing it because they hated Lennie, George would have done it for the sake of Lennie’s safety and mental state. George would have felt guilty if he did not handle it himself. One reason George was justified in killing Lennie was that George had realized Lennie would never get better and their dream would never come true.
In the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. George and Lennie were best friends, and have been since they were little. They got ran out of Weed(the old farm they used to work at) for harassing a girl and not letting her go. He was just scared from her screaming and kicking. He didn’t mean to harm, or scare her.
