Some people may argue that these are not the reasons why it was a turning point. Some people may say that both Union and Confederate did not lose a significant of soldiers. If you look at Document B Chart it shows you the estimated casualties at Gettysburg and it was a lot. Some people may say that the Confederate did not lose The Battle of Gettysburg. General Robert E. This is proving that Lee was ready to surrender after Gettysburg. Morale was a major factor as to why Gettysburg was a turning point. The Battle of Gettysburg was a game changer in the Civil War because of it’s geography, morale, and losses. Geography because it was fought in the North. Morale because Robert E. It was an important victory for the South because if they would of won the battle they would've probably won the war. In the Battle of Gettysburg Lee’s plan was to try to invade the North although the North had already established the ‘’J’’ hook and had the high ground, which meant that if the South wanted to attack they would have to go from the low grounds up to the high grounds where the Union was .
What led to this battle, was General Robert. E. Lee, was leading his army to Pennsylvania, to try to gain a food advantage over the North. Unbeknownst to both sides, this would be the first battle in the North. Lee had hoped that with a northern victory, external countries would view the south as an organized country, and not a group of “rag tag bandits”, as some northerner’s called the south. He also hoped that a northern victory would finally make the Union allow the South to become its own country.
Gettysburg had done both armies in. Meade needed time to account for his losses and clean up the mess at Gettysburg. He also had strategic reasons for not pursuing Lee after the battle. Meade knew that Lee had sometimes performed fake retreats in order to swing around the back of his opponent’s army and attack from all sides. Meade knew if he did this he would surely be decimated by his opponents.
Before this Lee was making all the Union Generals look terrible and then the Union finally got a win. This changed the whole war because then the Union started winning more battles and they would add up and eventually lead to them winning the war. There was no chance of the Union winning the war until this

In Document C, excerpts from two letters written by Robert E. Lee to Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Lee wrote about his loss and asked to replace him because he failed to win the Battle of Gettysburg. After losing, public newspapers wrote about his loss against the North which discouraged him even more. General Lee was someone many troops looked up to and he inspired many, seeing that he was so discouraged after one loss may have lost some motivation from the rest of the troops which can cause the turning point. In President Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address”, he spoke about the dead soldiers and told the troops to give “the last full measure of devotion” which means to fight to ‘till you die to honor them. This speech no doubt highly lifted the Union troop’s spirits for the future battles in the Civil War which may potentially have caused the turning

At the start of the War in it's whole, the Confederate troops were convinced they could take on the Union troops, underestimating the strength of the North, later being provided with the increase in deaths throughout the war. The North, or Union Army, did however switch Commanders, mentioning the number of losses at the beginning of the war, however, when Ulysses S. Grant was appointed as General Commander of the Union Army, he utilized the right skills in defeating Lee. When it all had finally come to what seemed like an end, Robert E.
