The Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War On July 1st, 1863, Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Confederate Army, invaded the North for a second time, thus, starting the beginning of the most important battle of the Civil War, deemed the Battle at Gettysburg. During that particular bloody summer, Commander Lee was hoping to settle this once and for all, demolish the Union troops on their homeland, and come to an agreement as well as seek negotiation for peace within all States. At the said time of the war, The Confederate Commander had utilized the Shenandoah Valley as protection for his troops from the Union, however encountered the Union Army firsthand. In Dennis B. Fradin's The Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate soldiers lacked skill and the aid, furthermore the troops could not be supplied efficiently, thus leaving them little resources to fend off of. At the start of the War in it's whole, the Confederate troops were convinced they could take on the Union troops, underestimating the strength of the North, later being provided with the increase in deaths throughout the war. The North, or Union Army, did however switch Commanders, mentioning the number of losses at the beginning of the war, however, when Ulysses S. Grant was appointed as General Commander of the Union Army, he utilized the right skills in defeating Lee. When it all had finally come to what seemed like an end, Robert E. In the back of my mind, leaving VA History in my senior year of High School, of course I had always known the Civil War was, still is, and perhaps will always be the most important war in our American past, however for some reason, the Battle of Gettysburg stood out to me. Turning points in wars are very interesting to me, furthermore Gettysburg seemed like the perfect topic to write about. The Union's victory prevented Lee from invading the North, which is direly important to not only the war and the battle alone, but for US history all in closing.
