When my partner and I initially discussed hip-hop as potentially being our semester long project topic, we immediately realized that this topic gave us a broad spectrum to research. Hip-hop is a music industry that inspires artist to make personal connections of what the struggles were when they lived in underrepresented communities. What I have recently discovered through research is that although some rap artists preach the utilization of drugs, guns, and gangs, there are those who are supporting these messages to allow their real life voices and stories to be heard. Also, we included their desires for freedom of speech and the influence that these artists have on the youth. Everyday people are striving to become the next Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Will Smith and so on, which has a major effect on what the African-American youth portray themselves as. What was shocking to discover was that rap shares its roots with other popular forms of African-American music, such as jazz, blues, and soul. The difference between rap and the other types of music, is that rap is a part of personal and political expression. That difference has allowed hip-hop to become one of the most prominent industry in the United States. During our presentation, I plan to inform the audience of what similarities that hip-hop has with jazz, blues and soul, but to also explain why so many still listen to and are inspired today. Although our presentations will include several more reasons for hip-hop and why was it so significance and how is it still significance to the African-American community, we plan to also explain the progression of how it became the revolutionizing message it is
