How Is Horatio A Foil To Hamlet

A tragic hero is a character who find himself destined for downfall, suffering or death. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare creates a character and names it Hamlet, who is very complex and driven. During the play, Hamlet experiences a great loss when losing his father and later being even more upset when finding out his uncle Claudius is his murderer. His actions and thoughts throughout the play show the audience the extent of his unpredictable and mixed personality. His response to many situations causes him to have bad outcomes and ultimately leads to his own death. Although, both Hamlet and Claudius both are manipulative and ambitious, they have different agendas. Horatio is a foil to Hamlet whose presence of mind allows him to think through situations rather than react like Hamlet. Lastly, the themes and symbols of death, women in society and Yorick’s skull are inspired by Hamlet. Throughout the play, the events of Hamlet’s life depict a tragic hero. Hamlet spends most of the play in deep contemplation about life and death and possibly decide the ultimate decision to end his life or not. These thoughts did not only make him seem mad but as well feed his hesitation to kill Claudius. His inability gives more time for Claudius to come up with a plan to get rid of Hamlet since he is threat to his title of being a King. Although the audience felt pity for Hamlet’s character due to his tragic death, this feeling is later restored with hope of a better future as Fortinbras, benefits from Hamlet’s death, becomes the new King of Denmark. Hamlet’s death was tragic as he was betrayed by Laertes. Claudius and Laertes plan ahead to poison Hamlet through a drink or the fencing sword. Even though after deep reflection Hamlet chose life ironically death played his role and took away a loving prince. Betrayed and killed as part of Claudius
