Short Story Final Essay (Rough Draft) Has anyone, as the reader, noticed that the author uses literary techniques to try and get their point across? Whether it be theme, tone, mood, or irony the reader can tell what the author is trying to get across. Authors Kurt Vonnegut and Shirley Jackson have an effective and powerful use of irony that can easily be seen in the classic short stories “Harrison Bergeron”, “Possibility of Evil”, and “The Lottery.” Kurt Vonnegut uses irony to express his feelings towards society today and how they are trying to become all the same in the story “Harrison Bergeron.” Vonnegut uses irony towards Harrison’s death. The reader does not expect that Harrison is going to die for taking off his handicaps or for escaping prison. Vonnegut also portrays irony when he tells how Harrison’s parents watch him die, but never remember that their son is dead. Strangeworth and the setting. Shirley Jackson, through the eyes of Miss. Strangeworth, tries to portray a woman who is sweet and kind and who wants to warn everyone of what the evil could do to them. In the town, people receive letters from an anonymous person, Miss. Strangeworth. Someone happens to see her drop a letter and goes and cuts her most prized possession. The setting of the story has an ironic twist to it because Miss. Strangeworth's grandfather founded the small town that she lives in and built the house that she lives in as well. Miss. Strangeworth believed that by sending these letters that she wrote , she could warn people of the evil that could happen and help make the town better, but in reality, she was making it worse.
