In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities the role of women is strongly portrayed throughout different women in the story. Charles Dickens uses Thérèse Defarge, Miss Pross, and Lucie Manette each illustrating a different responsibility that embellishes their specific role play throughout the novel. Madame Defarge is represented as a viciousness character who embodies a vengeful attitude. She is out to get revenge on the Evrémomdes because they sexually harassed her sister, and killed her brother. This sentence gives the reader an idea of what her character is about. After these descriptive characteristics, right away the reader might think of Madame Defarge as someone who sees things her way, and that she does not necessarily care what other people are doing and thinking. Nevertheless, Dickens incorporates that she has a great composure of manner, which means that she is tranquil, and peaceful a lot of the time. Throughout the novel Madame Defarge is knitting a list of her intended victims that she is planning to kill. This portrays her ruthless and heartless character. Lucie Manette was a “short, slight, pretty figure,” with a “quantity of golden hair.” (24) Lucie was known for her physical features as in her beauty, and her golden hair. She is recognized as “The Golden Thread.” Lucie is notorious for this because The Golden Thread could be referred to as resurrection in which she recalled her dad, who is Dr.Manette, back to life. She could also be known as “The Golden Thread” because of her golden hair. Just like Miss Pross, Lucie demonstrates the role of motherly character. Lucie has developed this characteristic from Miss Pross. As Lucie carries on the motherly position from Miss Pross, it is important to play this part and be their for her own child. She realizes and understands how much it impacted her life not having a motherly figure in it so she wants to make sure that her daughter Lucie, has opportunity that she never had. Lucie is very genuine, and compassionate towards other people, just like other people such as Jarvis Lorry, and Miss Pross are nice towards
