According to Gayle Holste (2002), William Shakespeare was born to a well known wool and leather merchant and his wife in 1564. His exact birthday isn't known but, it is said to have been on April 23rd. In Stratford-upon-Avon, England, when Shakespeare was eighteen years old, he married Anne Hathaway, who was twenty-six years old in 1582. Together they had three children: Susanna who was the oldest, followed by twins, Judith and Hamnet. Holste (2002) expressed that Hamnet died at eleven, but their daughters, Susanna and Judith, reached adulthood. The play is said to have been written in the early 1600’s. It was performed by the King’s Men at the court of King James I on November 1,1604 (Sparknotes, 2002). According to Barron’s Othello, Shakespeare based his play off a novel written by Giraldi Cinthio. This play is set in the late sixteenth century during the war between Turkey and Venice. Othello and Desdemona married and wanted to build a life together. Though they overcame a number of obstacles to their marriage such as Othello being black and she was white, and their age difference, their marriage was sabotaged by lago, who made othello believed that desdemona was unfaithful. Iago tells the audience of his evil scheme, he arranged for Cassio to lose his position as lieutenant and continues to make othello believes that Desdemona is unfaithful. At the end of Act III, scene iii, Othello kneels with Iago and vows to not change his mind till he has achieved bloody revenge. Later Iago put the handkerchief (the gift Othello gave to Desdemona to prove his love for her) in Cassio’s room and arranges conversation with him. Iago was so jealous at the fact that Othello made cassio his lieutenant even though he did not have any experience and of Othello for being such a prosperous soldier. Iago’s plans caused many deaths (123HelpMe, 2016). Roderigo also shows jealousy towards Othello, because of Desdemona. Roderigo is also important to the plot, his actions perform as a motivation in the play. Othello is convinced by Iago that his wife Desdemona is having and affair with Cassio.
