“All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” I believe George Orwell illustrates an overlooked issue in today's society. Everyone talks about trying to create equality , yet at the same time trying to be better. We pretend we are just and fair while ignoring the cruelty and savagery in the world. Even the names of these malevolent acts has changed. To make them sound less severe, we have given them euphemisms, slavery is now called human trafficking. Human trafficking (Slavery) occurs more today than in any other time in history. The percentage of humans enslaved has increased by over 250%, compared to when slavery was abolished, Despite living in a rather peaceful period in history, the cruelty that happens every day - which we ignore - has been steadily growing worse. The value of life is deteriorating. The average price of a slave in the 1800’s, in today's terms, was $40,000USD, now it is only $90USD. People may believe that this doesn't affect them and it doesn't happen in their country, but it happens everywhere from small villages to major cities. The lives of slaves no longer matter. Disposable. There is and never will be a shortage of slaves. Every 30 seconds another person falls victim to human trafficking and becomes a slave. The modern-day slave industry(human trafficking) is valued at $31.6 billion USD which is only $0.5 billion USD less than the drug industry, the #1 ranked crime industry. Despite this, the global spending to stop the drug trade is $100 billion USD whereas the global spending for the slave trade is only $124 million USD. This problem can’t be solved by the government alone. You must do something. You are entitled to
