Character Analysis
Of Mice and Men In the short story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the characters Slim, the wise skinner and the boss’ son Curley have different traits about them but one could be envious of the other despite the class’ they’re in. Slim is a has a genuine soul and is a natural leader who’s opinion is taken wholeheartedly, he is very confident with himself and doesn’t have to prove to other people who he is. Curley is a smaller man who is self conscious and picks fights with anyone, he has a specific problem with bigger people because he wants to be a bigger someone. Curley has a need to show his power over other people whether it’s by threatening them or beating them up. Slim is very respected by the other men on the ranch so much so they call him the Prince of the Ranch. “He moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsman”- “He was a jerkline skinner the Prince of the Ranch” (pg 33). Slim has never had to fight anyone for people to respect him, he just lived free by not judging and treating everybody equally. “...all talk stopped when he spoke…”-”His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (pg 33).

“...a range of medicine bottles both for himself and for the horses” (pg 66). Slim and Crooks shared the same interests and had a mutual respect for eachother. “Slim’s a real skinner, he looks out for his team” (pg 74). Meaning that Slim keeps an eye out for his team of mules that he takes out everyday for work “ One of my mules got a bad hoof, got to get some tar on it” (pg 48). Crooks and Slim both like to care for the horses, Crooks is the main care taker and Slim makes sure that the mules he’s using are always in good
