Sometimes people have to make a hard decision or choice in life when deep down they have to end up letting go of one of the options. In the story, “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” that was brought to life by W.D Wetherell, when the narrator had to make a hard choice of either letting Sheila go or the bass. There are many reasons the narrator had one of the hardest choices, including his immaturity as a teenage boy. The other main reason that it was a hard choice was that he wanted to impress Sheila, and since she didn’t like fishing he had to pretend to be someone he was not. Firstly, in the beginning of the story the narrator had an obsession with Sheila.

Mono Lake is located near the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is one of the oldest lakes in North America. It used to cover most of the Great Basin in North America but dried up after the melting of the glaciers around 700,000 years ago. Mono Lake is fed from inflows and rainfall and the mountains surrounding Mono Lake form a closed hydrological basin the only way for water to leave is through evaporation. The lake has salinity levels of 80.8g/l while an average freshwater lake has about 3g/l. As well as having high salinity the lake also has very basic PH levels of about 9.8 while freshwater lakes have a PH level of about 7. Due to it’s high salinity and PH levels Mono lake has a small variety of life in it’s waters.
A Hmong story cloth or Paj Ntaub, is a textile art that is embroidered and practiced by Hmong men and women to record and retell the stories of my Hmong community. And when I was little, I found one of my grandmother’s unfinished story cloths. It was raggedy, stained in one corner, and smelled of mold and mildew. The pink and green threads that were once so bright had become tangled and faded as it simply trailed of the embroidered art. On this story cloth, it told the story of desperate Hmong refugees crossing the Mekong river from Laos into Thailand.
The setting of the story reveals a lot about the characters. The narrator uses the setting of the story to mirror the state of morality and corruption of the youth. The narrator also uses the setting to create an atmosphere that is appropriate for developing the character of the individuals within the story. In essence the narrator uses Greasy Lake as both a setting and character. The description that is given of Greasy Lake is very disturbing to most who read it.
