The Civil War was a brutal war where nobody went into battle with certainty that they would come out alive. This meant that it took someone with a strong will and immense dedication to the cause they were fighting for. The concept of such a willing person is strongly reflected in the movie Glory directed by Edward Zwick. In this movie, Edward Zwick was successful in creating powerful scenes that sent strong messages to the viewer and allowed them to see the Civil War in a new light. While the movie was full of meaningful scenes, there were three that stood out among the rest. These three scenes are successful in conveying the experience of the war, unveiling historical issues, and sharing a key message that can be learned from the Civil War. In the beginning, there were a bunch of men who signed up to fight for a cause. Along the way, they had their fair share of struggles and conflicts. At one point, they even lost sight of what their goal was, but at the end of the day, they were able to fight just as they had wanted to. One could argue that the Fifty-fourth regiment was not successful due to the fact that many of them died while leading the charge on Fort Wagner. However, it is through these three scenes and in this movie that the word “success” is defined. In Glory, success can be seen as someone who has faced a struggle and came out an improved person. For the men of the Ffifty-Ffourth regiment, their struggle was in the harsh training, and racism that trailed them, but they got past it and fought their hardest in the war. They overcame the obstacles of war and of a society that did not fully accept them. They went to fight for what they believed in and they did it together.
