The Midnight Star by Marie Lu tells the story of a supernatural girl, and others like her, who holds extraordinary powers. After her sister runs away from her, Adelina loses herself and loses sight of what is important. She becomes obsessed with using her powers to dominate others and becomes contentious with those around her. She successfully battles those who stand in her way and takes her place as an insuperable queen. During her quest for domination she learns many lessons, and evolves into a better person. Some lessons Adelina learns is that her powers are killing her and poisoning the world, that just because she was treated poorly in the past doesn’t give her a right to treat other people bad, and that it is right to make sacrifices for those she loves. She took advantage of Voiletta and eventually ended up driving her away. Adelina began to understand that her powers have had an effect on her she could not control. After her sister dies she becomes even more determined to find a solution that will save the others, and she continues to hope that there is some way to save her sister. She is faced with the opportunity to make the ultimate sacrifice for her sister. Moritas, the god of death, tells her that a soul must be replaced with a soul. Her sister can live, if she sacrifices her life. In considering this decision she thinks, “Perhaps, after all the lives I have taken, my atonement is to restore life to one.” (Lu, 293). This decision shows how far she has come from the ruthless killer she was previously. Making this sacrifice allows her sister to live, and take her place as queen. This is probably one of the most important lessons Adelina learned throughout her journey, allowing the end of her life to represent the better person she has
