How to be Free under Napoleon Step 1. Have a rebellion and drive out the Jones. Step 2. Put the pigs in charge and have your first set of rules ready to go. Step 3. Have Napoleon drive out the last truthful pig with his dog army, and lie to the rest of the animals saying how he was a traitor. Step 4. Change the rules to make sure Napoleon doesn’t get in hot water. Step 5. Enjoy your farm that consists lots of terror and slaughter. Well with all jokes aside, the animals are certainly not free under Napoleon’s rule. For one thing, the animals did not have to work as hard or as much under the Jones. This is where the author puts in words to explain Clover’s thoughts. (Chapter VII, pg.86-87) “As Clover looked down the hillside her eyes filled with tears. If she could have spoken her thoughts; it would have been to say that this was not what they had aimed at when they had set themselves years ago to work for the overthrow of the human race. These scenes of terror and slaughter were not what they had looked forward to on that night when old Major first stirred them to rebellion.” Clover pictured of what her version (by the author) of Animal Farm was, and she considered freedom. A society of animals that are all equal, the stronger animals would protect the weaker ones, and they didn’t have to suffer from hunger or Mr. Jones’ whip. Boxer looks to Napoleon for advice of if he should trample the dog to death since this dog did tried to kill him. The very next day the law was changed to (Chapter VIII,pg.91) "NO ANIMAL SHALL KILL ANY OTHER ANIMAL WITHOUT CAUSE." But as time goes on and Boxer’s twelfth birthday is approaching (the age of which a horse is considered retired), he decides to push himself and get the windmill repaired for the third time before his twelfth birthday comes. While Clover and Benjamin keep on telling him how he should take it easy, and not try to hurt himself. He ignores the two and keeps on going, with his quote of, “I will work harder!” Boxer pushed himself too hard, until he collapses from overworking himself to the point of exhaustion.
