Abstract
From the outside looking in, bull riding might be seen as a denim out on the Plains. Fly in from the city to a small town Western rodeo, or turn on a televised Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Built Ford Tough Series event, it might look that way. There is something else there too though, like a respect of a cowboy for a bull that keeps them coming back, that keeps even the survivors on the center of the stage. No other sport has more deaths and injuries than that of bull riding. One might say that football is dangerous because of the risk of concussion or motocross racing is risky due to the stunts they must perform, but bull riding is a risk for the cowboy’s life every time he gets on a bull in the chute. No other sport requires an eight second match up with a two thousand pound animal that could trample and severely injure or even kill the contestant (Equestrian Moments, 2014, May 20).
There is no argument that bull riding is the most dangerous sport there is. These cowboys do not have to participate in such a risky sport but it is what these cowboys love to do. The risk is part of the excitement that draws people in from all over the world to watch. The PRB has now reached as far north as Canada and all the way south to Australia. As the PBR continues to advance, so do the bulls. They will continue to become more dangerous as well as more talented. Bull riding will become more dangerous, and the spirit of the cowboy will be put to more challenging
