I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I am not page 42. So far, this book is about a girl named Scout and her brother Jem who live in Maycomb, Alabama. They live with their maid, Calpurnia, and their father, Atticus. In this LAP I will be predicting and evaluating.
In the days leading up to the crime Christopher Simmons would pressure his peers, Charlie Benjamin and John Tessmer, into assisting him in committing a crime. He wanted to burglarize a home and commit murder by tying up the victim and throwing them off of a bridge.. He told them that they could get away with it because they were all under eighteen meaning that no matter what they did they couldn’t get the death sentence. Christopher Simmons came up with the idea to break into the home of Shirley Crook, and without telling the others about it also had planned to murder her as well. The trio met up at Brian Moomey’s house, a local convicted felon who allowed teens to hang out on his property.
To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on multiple significant ideas to highlight the main ideas of the novel. One of great magnitude is explained in chapter three of the novel when author Harper Lee simplifies the importance of being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes to view each different perspective. “First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folk. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” Be understanding, realize that honest mistakes happen as in the excerpt with Scout and Walter.

When Aunt Alexandra comes to stay with the Finches, one of the statements she makes is that “when you stop to think about it, [her and Atticus’] generation’s practically the first in the Finch family not to marry its cousins” (Lee 173). The Finch Family has formed a tradition that was clearly difficult to break until Aunt Alexandra’s generation.
I learned that you have to listen to everyone even if it seems like they will not have information needed you will never know unless you just listen to what they have to say because it is easy to incriminate the innocent but difficult to prove their innocence. This nonfiction book help me shaped my thoughts on the death penalty by opening my eyes to the truth, truth is that not everything is what it seems and not every offender is completely guilty for the crime they have been accused of. I now comprehend that each crime is different and sometimes it does include two offenders and even though those two offenders committed the crime and worked together to fulfill the goal to break a law, the Justice System is not always right and the sentences they give out are not always the correct ones. I am for the death penalty, although I have never lost a family member due to a criminal act, I still consider the death penalty a perfect sentence for someone who commits a crime of high risk so I agree with Harvey. Reading this novel has not changed my thoughts on the American Legal system, I have background knowledge on how the system works and I fully comprehend the advantages of being wealthy and getting trouble with the law.
To Kill A Mockingbird Literary Analysis Throughout To Kill A MockingBird, by Harper Lee there are many acts of courage. This is shown in Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Boo Radley. Atticus shows the most courage in the book but all three of these characters show true courage in some way, shape, or form. Boo Radley showed a lot of courage, but he was not in the storyline as much as Atticus. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, courage is defined as standing up for people and doing what’s right.

Certain characters, like Scout and Jeremy Finch, Bob Ewell, and the town folk truly create the main problem and set the theme of the story. For example, when Bob Ewell accuses Atticus Finch of being an african-american lover, because he is defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, according to Bob. Boo Radley is accused of being dead by Scout, Jem and Dill.
In the story, Maycomb County has many different social classes and depending on someone’s social status, they are treated and looked upon, a certain way. For example, two poor families, the Cunninghams and the Ewells, are discriminated against because of their lower status in society. For instance, after Scout beats up Walter Cunningham for getting her whipped, Jem invites Walter over for lunch. When Scout, Jem, and Walter reach the Finch's front steps, Walter, in Scout’s eyes, “had forgotten he was a Cunningham” (31). Even Scout, a six year old girl, perceives the Cunningham family as lower class.
