In relevance to the novel, the period of nearing WWII and the Great Depression at its peak shows the racism of the time and that things must get bad again before it gets better.
Atticus: Advice Column Dear Atticus, I am a lawyer and a father of 2, like yourself. My children are reaching the age where they are beginning to ask me questions about my work, but I am not sure what to tell them. I don’t know how much or how little I should tell them because I am not sure how much they will be able to understand. What should I do? Sincerely, Mark Smith.
Chapter 17: The first person called to the witness stand was Heck Tata, the local sheriff, Heck Tate exclaims how Bob Ewell called him over to the house saying that Mayella, his daughter, had been raped. Tate said that when he got to the house he found Mayella bruised and beaten up. Bob Ewell is then called to the stand. Bob says that he came out of the woods with kindling and he heard Mayella screaming he then says that when he looked into the window to see what had happened and he says that he saw Tom Robinson raping Mayella.
In society, people would usually associate with others who are the most similar to them since they tend to feel more comfortable around them. For instance, in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, is a story of Mayella Ewell who is a poor, white woman living in a racist environment during the 1930s. Some people will say that Mayella isn’t sincerely powerful and others might disagree. On the contrary, Mayella doesn’t have much capability when it comes down to her low financial status and her gender; however, her race is what makes her highly powerful. Mayella lives in a tremendously poor neighborhood since she “lived behind the town garbage dump”.
People can control many aspects of their life, but that kind of power can be challenged because of physical and social and social attributes like race, gender, and class. Traits can be limiting factors on how much flexibility someone has over their own life. Typically, rich, white males have the most power in relation to these three characteristics. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell is a poor, white, nineteen year old girl who lives in the slums of the fictional town Maycomb, Alabama.
To Kill a Mockingbird SEE Paragraph 1 The Finch Family symbolizes tradition and holds certain values in Aunt Alexandra’s eyes. When Aunt Alexandra comes to stay with the Finches, one of the statements she makes is that “when you stop to think about it, [her and Atticus’] generation’s practically the first in the Finch family not to marry its cousins” (Lee 173). The Finch Family has formed a tradition that was clearly difficult to break until Aunt Alexandra’s generation.
The Piltdown Man was a paleoanthropological hoax in which bone pieces were exhibited as the fossilized remains of a formerly obscure early human. These pieces comprised of parts of a skull and jawbone, said to have been gathered in 1912 from a rock pit at Piltdown, East Sussex, England. In 1912 Piltdown Man hit the news. Confirmation of the evolutionary 'missing link ' between primates and people had been found, in Britain.

While school may teach lessons, they are certainly not valuable life lessons. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird repeatedly shows the ineffectiveness of the education system in a child’s morals. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the Great Depression era in Alabama, where education was not the best. Teachers would only seek to teach their classes average, everyday lessons rather than valuable life teachings.
Mockingbirds In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, killing a mockingbird is considered committing a sin. Two men are considered metaphorical or figurative mockingbirds in the fact that they are considerate to others, but have something that puts them at a disadvantage to other people, these two men are Arthur, Boo, Radley and Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is at a bigger disadvantage because of how he was born, than what happened to him later in life. Tom has the disadvantage of being African American, in a racist town, and having a rubber like left hand, he was crippled on the left side.
Introduction • As Atticus once said, “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (Lee, 274). • Prejudice should not be present in court to ensure everyone is given an equal chance. • However, this failed to occur in the case of Leo Frank. The jury was unable to rise above social prejudice and see the case with an open mind.
