Fear is a very powerful emotion. It stops people from taking potentially great opportunities because they are scared it will never work out. However, getting over that fear is what will allow people to catapult to new heights and be more successful in the long run. Both The Grapes of Wrath and “How to Never Let Fear Hold You Back Again” utilize limitations preventing people from pursuing their dreams to prove allowing oneself to overcome said limitations will lead to a better life and a better state of mind.
Towards the end of the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, the farmers were doing great things. They found ways to protect the fruits from disease and pests and they found ways to make new fruits like nectarines. The failure the farmers had hung over everyone, all they saw was failure. It was like all the breakthroughs they had never even happened, and they could not find a way to fix their problems. These farmers allowed their failure and their fear of more failure to get in the way and they were unable to make any more advancements which in turn, stunted their personal growth. Furthermore, "How to Never Let Fear Hold You Back Again" agrees fear obscures the way people see opportunities that could help them succeed: “Fear shatters dreams, prevents organizations from achieving major breakthroughs" (Mayberry). Once someone allows their fear to get in their head, they will not be able to make any progress. Even large corporations and organizations that have hundreds of workers let their fear stop them from making possibly extremely helpful innovations. These corporations are mentally stopping themselves from growing and are physically stopping the growth of the company all because of an emotion. These excerpts both show what happens to
