The disaster of hurricane Katrina identified so many flaws in FEMA. Some of these flaws were due to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. The Homeland Security Act of 2002 deviated a lot of money from FEMA and weakened its ability to respond adequately to the disaster of Katrina. As you stated this bought on many changes to FEMA, which were now being addressed under the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act (PKEMRA).
This news article implies that FEMA should be disbanded. The author states that when the federal government gets involved in natural disasters, especially hurricanes, more harm may be caused than good. The federal government has been involved in responses at a much higher rate than in the past due to an increase in declared federal disasters averaging 139 a year. There are an abundance of federal guidelines that must be followed when a disaster occurs that often makes it difficult for officials to make clear and concise decisions. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina FEMA spent an excess of money that was not allocated correctly so much of the money was wasted.
Seasons typically divide a year into four parts (spring, summer, autumn, and winter). Weather is constantly changing throughout the year based on the current location of the sun in accordance to earth. The world relies on seasons to thrive, for instance, autumn is when nature shows its true beauty, bringing rain to quench the parched lips of summer. Although the changing of seasons may not be apparent in certain parts of the world, they are the key to human life. In “Something Uneasy in the Los Angeles Air,” Adrian Glick Kudler informs the public about Santa Ana winds in addition to introducing writers to back up her ideas.
PPHA 36650 Persuasive Policy Communication. Policy Memo Reader Profile: Kahlida Lloyd, the Director of the Office of Equity and Human Rights (City of New Orleans). The Office of Human Rights & Equity (OHRE) was recently established in 2019 to serve as a liaison to many of New Orleans' most underrepresented communities and to ensure that underrepresented residents have a voice in City Hall. The director helps develop policies and initiatives aimed at addressing systemic inequalities and promoting human rights within the city.
The glass castle was written in 2005. During that year, New Orleans and other areas in the gulf coast were struck by Hurricane Katrina; one of the biggest and most catastrophic hurricanes that impacted America. Many lives were lost and several were considered missing. As a result, the hurricane left numerous survivors stranded without any food, water, and shelter to resort to. Meanwhile other regions in west and south-south eastern nations were hit by massive earthquakes that left a high mass number of injured victims and numerous casualties.
New Orleans was founded on geologically young river deposits near the terminus of the North American continent’s largest delta. It is surrounded by water bodies on the three sides, with the highest point located about 25 feet above sea level. The Mississippi River is largely contributes to the most of the New Orleans’ landform. The rich soil which New Orleans is built on is made up of silt which is constantly covered with water every time the river floods or storm comes in from the water. This creates unique wetland landscape of swamps, salt-water marshes and bayous.
There are lots of things that is wrong with the city of New Orleans needs to improvements for a safe place to live. Louisiana are so far behind the times when it comes to technology, educations, housing, affordable healthcare, retirement programs for senior citizens, job opportunities and crime rates. If New Orleans was the safest place to live, then there would be no improvements for people to stay. New Orleans would have been the cleanest and safest place for people to live, if people choose to stay or move to another state for better opportunity. The city of New Orleans need to make changes in the direction of where the city’s stands.
This shows that people who do not evacuate are likely to get injured or killed and yearly in hurricanes about 60 people get hurt it may not seem like but every year 60 people hurt when they could just evacuate and be safe and not affected from the storm. Also, This is just in case you can not evacuate you should make sure the house you are staying is safe if not relocate to a shelter. If you believe your house is sturdy enough put up shutters to protect your windows and relax
According to sources, ten-thousand people around the world die from hurricanes and tropical storms (www.windows2universe.org). Hurricane Rita is approaching Texas, and we need to take action. I think evacuating the city is our best option considering that when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, one-thousand eight-hundred thirty-three fatalities occurred. Even though staying home and waiting out the storm is easier, it’s not the safest option. Think of how much money we would lose from staying in the city.
Along with the outrageous tornadoes, there are also a lot of droughts at summer time. The longest drought was during the dust bowl. The dust bowl was kind of like a dust storm. A dust storm is when wind blows a lot of dust in the air and is very
From the previous chapters one may conclude that engineering role had a significant impact on occurrence and scale of Hurricane Katrina catastrophe. According to ASCE report (2007), major part of the damage from hurricane was caused by the failure of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide reliable flood protection system. However, despite this fact the role of the government should not be omitted since it has a major power when it comes to funding of such kind of urban projects. McGee (2008) considers Hurricane Katrina to be a “classic example of government failure”. Thereby, he places the blame for sporadic funding of the flood protection system on the federal government represented by the US Congress.
Because the northeast United States is not a hurricane prone area, they were unprepared. Being unprepared for such a storm could only cause calamitous damage. Two hours before the hurricane came down, there was no warning, although it had been spotted in New Jersey. Sailors on the Atlantic experienced barometers dropping.
A market that will be affected in an area hit by a disaster is restaurant meals. Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana on August 29, 2005. As a result the city experienced massive flooding. “Local business owners and managers were strongly impacted by not just the physical damage of the hurricane and its aftermath but also by the loss of operations while the city was closed” (Corey & Deitch, 2011). People in the affected area will want to buy their food quickly and cheaply at supermarkets, not sit down for a slow, expensive meal.
In 2011, there was a high amount of rainfall falling across South East Queensland. This was caused by Cyclone Tasha and a La Nina. A La Nina is an unusual weather pattern that occurs every 3 – 5 years. It happens when one part of the Pacific Ocean cools, and another part warms up. Warmer sea temperatures can cause tropical cyclones.
One of the reason that cause hurricane it’s depend on environment. Hurricane use the warm air and warm ocean as the power of the storm. As being said, the warm temperature that form above the ocean create the rotating wind because when warm air and cool air are touching together then it makes an area of lower pressure, warm air is lighter than cool air so higher air pressure pushes into the lower pressure area and it cause hurricane.
