The novel, Fahrenheit 451, begins with Guy Montag setting fire on a house. He is a firemen, who burn the house of the people who keeps books or go against the rules. He meets a 17-year old girl named Clarisse McClellan. He is surprised at first, because Clarisse acts differently from other people. When he went back home, he found his wife, Mildred, almost dead, because she took too much sleeping pills. “Do you ever read any of the books you burn...Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of going to start them?” (p. 8). 2. Old woman got caught by firemen, and she chooses to die in the fire with her books. Montag realizes that there is something special about books, so he steals a book and runs away. Also, he feels guilty when firemen burn the old woman, which is an opposite reaction from “normal” firemen. “‘None of those books agree with each other…Come on now!’ She shook her head” (p. 38). 3. Montag learns that Clarisse died because of the car accident, according to Mildred. Montag pretends that he is sick so that he does not have to meet Beatty, but Beatty comes to Montag’s home.
