Death, fear, famine, the Revolutionary War was one of the darkest times in our history. Time Enough For Drums written by Ann Rinaldi, is based upon a family living throughout the Revolutionary War and the consequences within it. John Reid, one of the main characters keeps this book very interesting and makes me want to keep reading and reading. He is kind of like me, I always try to make everything interesting and make it fun. He helps the other main character Jemima Emerson throughout the story. Through John Reid’s help with Jemima he turned a once little girl, into a grown civilized women using his encouraging, cautious, and strict ways! John Reid is Jemima Emerson’s so call tutor. Wealthy families back then had tutors teach there children, there were no public schools. Jemima doesn’t like being tutored by him. He is a tory which means he supports the british, although Jemima supports the Patriots also known as the Americans. John has to be encouraging to Jemima while tutoring her. Turns out he is a spy for the American army working under cover. John did not want Jemima to find out but she did. He tells her not to tell a soul. He has to be very cautious throughout the story cause if he isn’t he will be killed immediately. After a while Jemima and John Reid fall in love. Now he is off in war and the only way they can communicate is through letters. But he needs to be sneaky with those letters so the British can not read them. “It was then I started getting letters in invisible ink”(Rinaldi 234). He sends letters with invisible ink! John is a pretty smart guy not to get caught being a spy or in the American army he is lucky he is so cautious cause if he was not he would be
