Diabetes sets me apart from the rest of the crowd, but It will never define me. In fact my condition has made me a stronger and more developed person. It is not a negative aspect of my life, but it has put me through some emotional times. Without this characteristic, I wouldn't be nearly as well rounded as I am today. Diabetes has shaped me into a more motivated, independent, and joyful person.
At the age of two years old my parents received word that I was diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes. The fact that I was diagnosed with Diabetes came as a surprise to my parents, but instead of worrying what the future held, they were just grateful I came out of the hospital alive and healthy. By the age of eight I was giving myself my shots, and keeping track of all my numbers by myself. At the age of ten I received my first insulin pump. This insulin pump to me was like a first phone to every other kid. I was so grateful to receive this insulin pump because not only was it something that I could call my own, but it was now a part of me. The pump has shown me how to be a responsible adult because I have to manually give myself insulin at every meal and snack, and if I don’t there can be serious consequences as well as complications. As much as I loved this pump I didn't want it to be something that defines me. Fifteen years has gone by, and I still am keeping up with everything that’s necessary.
