Appearance Versus Reality In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn there are several different examples of reality versus appearance. What appearance versus reality is is simply when something appears to be different than what is actually happening, or when there’s more than what meets the eye. This may happen quite a bit in real life also, even more than you might notice. Many people in this book appear differently than they actually are, including Huck. One instance of this is when Huck faked his own death in Pap’s cabin in the woods. At first Huck was happy living with Pap because it wasn’t a luxury lifestyle like he had before, but after a while he got tired of Pap going a drunken rage and trying to beat and kill Huck which only fueled Huck’s will to leave. His plan worked out better than he expected it would because he was able to find a decent amount of food and items to live off of for a while. “ I took the ax and smashed in the door. I beat it and hacked it considerable a-doing it. There was some doubt with some of the people in the town even though they put on a good act.
