Huckleberry Finn Argumentative Essay

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is a timeless book which is a part of American culture and is seen as one of the greatest books written of all time. It is the sequel to the book Adventures of Tom Sawyer and revolves around Huck as he tries to find his identity. The book starts in the same town before the civil war starts, where Huck lives with an old widow and Miss. Watson as they try to civilize him. Then Huck’s father who is a drunk comes back, only take Huck and try to claim Huck’s fortune as his own. They lived in an old hut down the river together, where eventually Huck fakes his own death to get away from his father and his drunk beatings. Jim cared for Huck as one would love their own child, “..would always call me honey, and pet me, and do everything he could think of for me, and how good he always was...” (Document E). Jim seemed to always be there for Huck, and brighten his day as Jim was very attentive to Huck. Not only that, but Jim would worry and help Huck even when it wasn’t returned, “I’d see him standing my watch on top of his’n, stead of calling me so I could go on sleeping, and see him how glad I was coming out of the fog.” (Document E). Jim is more understanding and kind to Huck than his own father, who would drunkenly beat Huck. It is very clear why Huck would think of Jim so highly considering Jim let Huck sleep in while he did his shifts for him while they were on the canoe. Even when Jim gets captured and work’s at the Phelp’s home Huck is still determined to help Jim escape, “ ‘I’m low down; and I’m agoing to steal him...’…’Here’s the ticket. This hole’s big enough for Jim to get through if we wrench off the board.’ ” (Document F). It is evident that the bond that Huck and Jim have is something that cannot be broken and the support they receive from one another is not typical, although it benefits both. Even though Huck could have easily just have let Jim be a slave at the Phelp’s residence, and be washed clean of helping him and just go on with life he chose not to. He chose to get into the house, and find a way to help him escape and be free.
