The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain, is a classic piece of literature not for the fact of the storyline but the meaning and beliefs portrayed through the characters. The story takes place in St. Petersburg, Missouri. Huck Finn, the main character, a caucasian boy who ran away from his father known as Pap. He ran away and encountered a “nigger” named Jim, a runaway slave, decided to run away because he didn’t want to be sold and seperated from his family. He ran away to the south to buy his family back. The only way possible to buy his wife and kid was going to the north and saving money to physically buy them. According to Nigger or Slave, they expose that the idea of replacing the connections words from the character to the audience like “nigger” would be a terrible idea because it takes away the power by explaining that the critics “ They bemoaned the lost opportunities for readers to engage in provocative discussions about the role of racism in American history” exposing the idea that indeed the reader will lose connections from the audience the reader (Smith). To extend, the article “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Anne Marie Hacht” also explains that the purpose of the book will be removed if the words like “nigger” get removed. The article states “point out that the terms used in the book are authentic to the story's setting” emphasizing the fact that the book was not made to be modified. The book has to stay the same to be able to keep the message and connections towards the audience(The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn). The book will lose connections from the character like Jim to the audience which was the point of the book. Mark Twain wanted to make a statement. He wanted his audience to get a visual into his audience who sadly but truly were racist. His message is not going to be able to be portrayed by replacing the words that make the book special to truly have a connection from the character there actions like a heroic nigger and a Caucasian boy who begins to see the real world by how it actually
