This makes these artists more relatable to an everyday person. A lot of these everyday people listen to country music, as it has those relatable topics of love and heartbreak written in them. They had to lie about when they actually got married and hid in Lakeland, Florida until their official marriage because of a scandal surrounding her previous marriage to Don Chapel. Wynette had stayed with Jones overnight, and the next day the two flew to Mexico. They decided that Wynette needed to divorce Chapel, so they could get married. This caused an issue because Tennessee would not acknowledge a divorce that was made in Mexico. However, Wynette knew that she could use the law against itself. One of the most prevalent issues was George Jones’ alcoholism. Jones was known for getting angry when he got drunk. He would take out his anger on anyone, including the people that he loved. One time, when Wynette and Jones were at their home in Lakeland, Florida, before the marriage, he attacked Wynette. Jones had gotten extremely drunk with his friends. Wynette had tried to bring Jones home, but he got mad at her, punched her, and smashed a bottle on a wall.
