Throughout the history of American Literature, there have been hundreds of influential pieces which have left a mark on other writers. The book “In Honor of David Anderson Brooks, My Father” by Gwendolyn Brooks utilizes a unique writing style, theme and American values. This text was sharing her father’s story and personality to the reader before he passed away. He presumably lived alone and maintained his own home.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starts in 1951 with a young woman of four. She told her close friends that she had “a knot inside me”. Her friends strongly encouraged her to go to the doctor, but she denied the advice. She kept this pain from her family so they wouldn’t worry about her, and then she became pregnant with her fifth child Joe. Shortly after she birthed Joe, she started experiencing external bleeding and stated she had a hard lump inside her womb.
2015 Read and Response: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Throughout the Lacks’ family history there has been nothing more but absence of information and deceitfulness. The prolonged journey of finding out who exactly Deborah’s mother was and how she changed science was all but easy. One of the most common messages throughout the book was the conflict between individual rights and scientific exploration from high, authoritative figures such as scientists, doctors and the research community.
In his essay “Giant Dreams, Midget Abilities,” David Sedaris provides an account of his life at age twelve with indications that he was an acquiescent boy. He always seemed fearful to challenge authority and to clearly say how he felt about doing things he didn’t want to do. For example, his father, being very enthusiastic about jazz music, told him about his experience at the Blue Note; instead of admitting that he didn’t really care, David said “I bet that was really something” (16-17). Many people around the globe can speak more than one language. In some countries, like Den-mark, it is required by the government that you learn a foreign language at school. Of course not all countries are as privileged as Denmark. Some people have to reach out themselves if they feel the need to learn a new language. One of those people is 41-year old David Sedaris, who wrote an essay called ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’ in 2005.
Most people say life is extremely valuable and every day is a gift. Personally, I did not believe life was very valuable until I was medicated. David Sedaris’ short story “Us & Them” is a high comedy that uses irony and wordplay to convey the idea that just because someone isn’t exactly like you doesn’t mean you can be rude to them. In this story, there are many examples of word-play.
Passage Analysis #1 Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper” Gilman, in this particular passage of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” explores the theme of female oppression through imagery and symbolism of the wall-paper. These elements of literature make the wall-paper come to life for both the narrator and the audience. “The front pattern does move”(55) personifies the wall-paper to be so animate and physically restraining that the woman behind it must shake it to attempt to escape. The italicization of “does” serves to further affirm that the wallpaper exhibits restrictive human-like behaviors - particularly those of dominant men in society. The narrator states that there are “a great many woman behind”(55), extending the metaphor to all Victorian women in the United States and others around the world who are oppressed.
In his essay Santaland Diaries that was aired on NPR, David sedaris wanted to accomplish two things. First was spoof the structure and tone of exposes and create an audience for his work, because although he had had slight success in his earlier stories he needed a breakthrough to get him started. “One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest” is a film directed by Miloš Forman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey. The Film was released in 1975. It is the story of a convicted man, trying to outsmart the American legal system by playing mentally ill. The film starts at the beginning when the main character, Randle McMurphy, enters the mental institution. It won 6 Golden Globes as well as 5 Oscars and many other nominations.

“Us and Them“:Analysis In David Sedaris writing piece “Us and Them” can be said to be a strong text talking about a young boy’s interest of a non technologized family that differentiates from a normal american family .Sedaris discusses a family moving to a different towns in the narrative. In Sedaris writing a young boy in that family had a curiosity about the daily life of his neighbors known as the Tomkeys, as they were known for being strange from a normal family. The Tomkeys family was known to be different as simply as they did not believe in television. The young boy found amusing ,always spying on the tomkeys daily life , as it was like a television show for him .

Lee’s use of elements of style in To Kill a Mockingbird to convey and support the classic’s theme is what makes both the novel and the author so distinguishable. Using the literary devices of setting, symbolization, and characterization, Lee is consistently referencing the theme of racism and inequality in society. Throughout the first chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee frequently references age and appearance when discussing the town of Maycomb. ” Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it” (Lee 9). The deeper meaning that Lee is successfully conveying through this description of an old and tired town can be used to represent the old and outdated morals and view of Maycomb’s inhabitants.
Marxist Within the Mockingbird Today the world is open to people of all races, economic classes and much more, but in the 1930’s the world was not as accepting. To Kill A Mockingbird, is a book by Harper Lee which takes place in the 1930’s. Throughout the story there are issues with feminism, racism, and injustice. It starts with a young girl and her family, and as the book progresses the reader gets to find out some of the things that go on in their life and around them. Such as a stressful case which includes, a black innocent man who is accused for something he did not do.
