Throughout A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hermia demonstrates human agency in her love relationship with Lysander. Human agency is a big key in Hermia’s aspect of love, the reason for this is because Hermia chooses to be with Lysander instead of Demetrius, which is her fate. Although Hermia’s life is full of fate, she shows more agency. She decided to disobey her father, Egeus, and use her free will. I can infer that Hermia is very independent, which shows human agency. For example, Hermia states “I know not by what power I am made bold, nor how it may concern my modesty” (1.1.61-62). This validates the human agency because Hermia is not afraid of the consequences her decisions may bring her, but rather willing to overcome obstacles with Lysander, the love of her life. …show more content…

Hermia states these words, meaning that she refuses to let anyone decide the fate of who she loves. Hermia’s confidence and bravery help her conquer difficult challenges in love. In addition, Hermia chooses to run away into the woods with Lysander out of free will. “I swear to thee by cupid’s strongest bow.in the same place thou hast appointed me, Tomorrow truly will I meet with thee.” (1.1.172-181). A promise has been made by Hermia which demonstrates her full dedication to being with Lysander and not letting anything get in between their relationship, In Act 2, Scene 2, Hermia expresses “But, gentle friend, for love and courtesy, Lie further off in human modesty.” (1.1.62-63). Hermia does not intend to share a bed with Lysander, instead, she plans to keep her modesty. While in the woods, chaos starts to unfold. Hermia conveys “Though she but little she is fierce.”
