To demonstrate, the author of “Essential Secrets of Psychotherapy: Fate, Destiny, and Responsibility” mentions how “fate refers to the existential givens of life, those aspects of existence…over which we can exert little or no control” (Doc E). One’s fate is something that they can’t control, so the negative outcomes from it are inevitable. Fate was never on Romeo and Juliet’s side, which set them up for their devastating deaths at the end. However, even though fate played a part in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, the impact love had on their brains was responsible for their deaths since it caused them to be possessed and react poorly to fate. As mentioned earlier, Helen Fisher’s TED Talk discusses how love can possess one and cause them to do things they wouldn’t normally do.

Throughout A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hermia demonstrates human agency in her love relationship with Lysander. Human agency is a big key in Hermia’s aspect of love, the reason for this is because Hermia chooses to be with Lysander instead of Demetrius, which is her fate. Although Hermia’s life is full of fate, she shows more agency. She decided to disobey her father, Egeus, and use her free will. I can infer that Hermia is very independent, which shows human agency.

Oftentimes in literature, using magic is portrayed in a way that results in conflict. In the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses magic to create dissension between the characters. For instance, magic was used in a love spell, which later strained the relationship between Lysander and Hermia, created tension within Helena’s and Hermia’s friendship, and catalyzed Titania’s love for Bottom. Initially, Lysander and Hermia both love each other, but Lysander is put under a magical spell which causes him to fall in love with Helena. Because of this, Hermia and Lysander begin to feud and tarnish their relationship.
