A Midsummer Night’s Dream Final Project Desperate for attention from her beloved Demetrius, Helena follows him into the woods as he goes to meet Hermia, whom he loves. After the fairy king, Oberon, watches this sad, sad display, he interferes and sends his resident jester, Robin “Puck” Goodfellow to apply love potion on Demetrius so he can reciprocate the love back to Helena. However, Puck did not complete the task as intended, resulting in both Demetrius and Lysander finding Helena irresistible. Skeptical and frankly confused, Helena lashes out and gives the two a piece of her mind.

In the book A Midsummer Night’s Dream, four lovers are put under love spells, creating obstacles for two couples. Problems often happen on the journey of finding true love, making the stereotypical “fairytale” relationship difficult to find. There are always obstacles and troubles on true love’s path.
Many cases of love are an act of agency, the couple chose to be together. In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” by William Shakespeare, love is an act of fate in Hermia’s love life. Hermia’s, one of the four lovers, love life is an act of fate because Egeus, father of Hermia, chose who has to marry. Hermia’s love life is also fate because Theseus, King of Athens, told Egeus that Hermia will marry Lysander. Hemia’s love life is agency because she is choosing to run away with Lysander to get married.

Oftentimes in literature, using magic is portrayed in a way that results in conflict. In the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses magic to create dissension between the characters. For instance, magic was used in a love spell, which later strained the relationship between Lysander and Hermia, created tension within Helena’s and Hermia’s friendship, and catalyzed Titania’s love for Bottom. Initially, Lysander and Hermia both love each other, but Lysander is put under a magical spell which causes him to fall in love with Helena. Because of this, Hermia and Lysander begin to feud and tarnish their relationship.

But magic can sometimes…just be an illusion.” In Shakespeare’s play, he uses the diversity of a person’s illusions to further progress the major theme of love in the story. Lysander comments from the play that, “The course of true love never did run smooth” (1.1.134). The couples are constantly dealing with obstacles in their love life. Difficulties that can face a romantic relationship are illustrated through the various couples in the play.

Although there are many different themes that readers can interpret, one that really stands out is that love is difficult. This theme is supported when Hermia 's father tries to tear Hermia and Lysander apart and they decide the best decision is to run away together. Also Oberon and Titania can 't stand each other and always get into arguments. The love potion throughout the play messed up Titania and Oberon’s true love.

Shakespeare uses forced love by describing how Puck puts the love potion in Demetrius and Lysander’s eyes which causes them to both love Helena. This is considered forced love because it forces both of them to love Helena.
