A singer named Javan once said “Love can sometimes be magic. But magic can sometimes…just be an illusion.” In Shakespeare’s play, he uses the diversity of a person’s illusions to further progress the major theme of love in the story. Although these ‘illusions’ were made to mislead, they actually aid in revealing the story behind the love stories we see in the play. Bottom’s and Titania’s love demonstrates how the influence of magically infused items can lead to people having fake understanding of true love. This is shown when Titania expresses her love to Bottom and states “thou art wise as thou art beautiful” (3.1. 131). This proves to us that love can be misguided by an illusion. The reality in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” symbolizes the characters true love and desires. A good example of reality in this play is Lysander and Hermia’s relationship. Their relationship shows us that true love can endure many obstacles. In this play, reality is like the window that gave them the strength to stay together and have more faith on their love. Lysander expresses his love, and security towards Hermia by stating “I am belov’d of beauteous Hermia, why should I not then prosecute my right?” (1.1.104-105) This shows us that Lysander wants Hermia and he feels that he has a right to love her, and no one else does because they are both truly in love with each other. Throughout the play Lysander and Hermia’s love stayed relatively consistent which means that although they went through many problems and conflicts, their love still somewhat remained and lasted until the end of the play. Though illusions and reality might seem as totally different things, in this play there is a point where illusions and reality connect.
