Falling in love, being tricked, and following your heart are all important parts to A Midsummer’s Night Dream by Shakespeare. Throughout A Midsummer’s Night Dream there are many characters that face the struggles of love. Lysander is one who shows his challenges through love, and believes it will work out. He is always willing to do whatever he can in order to show his love. During this, Lysander shows his love to not one, but two women eventually learning his love was forced. Lysander shows his love is evident through overcoming many obstacles and never giving up on what he wants. Life and love has many obstacles to overcome, and Lysander knows overcoming them leads to a successful relationship. Lysander expresses that love has obstacles many times throughout A Midsummer’s Night Dream. One quote of Lysander’s that represents this is, “Ay me! for aught that I could ever read, Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth” (1.1.134-136). Lysander loves Hermia at the beginning, and they come up with a plan to leave together. In that process Lysander gets love juice on his eye ad wake up to see Helena first. He then grows love for Helena, but he eventually receives an antidote that removes the love juice. Lysander says this right after he received the love juice, “Hang off, thou cat, thou burr! Vile thing, let loose, Or I will shake thee from me like a serpent. Thy love? Out, tawny Tartar, out! Out, loathèd med'cine! O. hated potion, hence!” (3.2.270-275). Here Lysander is saying he doesn’t like Hermia anymore, and he likes Helena. Right before this he just loved Hermia, and now he loves Helena.
