How do the characters' choices, actions, external forces and fate contribute to their tragic fate and the theme of fate verse free will in the play of Romeo and Juliet? The theme of fate verse free will in Romeo and Juliet is a major aspect of the play. The characters choices and actions throughout the whole play have a significant impact on the tragic fate of Romeo and Juliet at the end of the play, but the characters are also influenced by eternal circumstances, other characters and not to mention the role of fate itself. The love between Romeo and Juliet is an excellent example of their free will. In the play, both Juliet and Romeo decide to pursue their love for each other, despite the fact that their families hate each other. This is shown in act 2, scene 2 when Romeo is at Juliets balcony, and they are talking and Juliet says that she does not care that one of them is Capulet and one of them is a Montague, she says that if they truly love each other their last names do not matter, and Romeo agrees with her. The constant tension and violence between the families create an environment where their love is very forbidden and is surly doomed from the start. This is shown throughout all the play, because whenever the families are in the vicinity of each other they clash heads. To add on, there are characters like Tybalt, the nurse and Friar Laurence that further complicate the situation they are in. These characters complicate the situation because the nurse is Romeo and Juliet's messenger, Friar. Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet and then helps Juliet fake her death so she can not marry pairs and run off with Romeo, and Tybalt gets in a dule with Romeo and gets killed, which gets Romeo
