Driven by Fate or Choice?
People thought the main characters in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare were driven by fate, not choice. Others think that Romeo and Juliet are driven by their choice. In the Prologue, we learn that the “star-crossed lovers” will “ take their own life.” (Shmoop Editorial Team) That was their destined fate, as predicted throughout the play. Romeo and Juliet think that they fell in love as soon as they met each other. Did they decide to take their own lives as determined by their fate? Or did they choose to end it all for love?
