People are always looking for someone to blame. It is no different when they read the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. There are many differing beliefs as to who is to blame for the deaths of the ill-fated young lovers, but the truth is that it was not one single person who determined what happened to Romeo and Juliet. Fate is to blame for the deaths of the teenage couple because it predetermined their unavoidable deaths, rushed the time span of the story, and put all of the characters into countless coincidental situations. No person in the story of Romeo and Juliet can be blamed for their deaths because Fate already predetermined their unavoidable deaths. Nothing any character did would have changed that. Everyone seems to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and it starts a chain reaction of irremediable events. The first coincidental situation is when Romeo and Benvolio just happen to come across an illiterate Capulet servant, who asks them, “God gi’ good e’en. I pray, sir, can you read?” (1. 2. 61-62.) If this had never happened, Romeo would have never gone to Capulet’s party, and it is unlikely that he would have ever met Juliet. Then, after the party, as Juliet stands on her balcony, she says the famous lines. “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” (2. 2. 36.) What are the chances that Romeo would be standing under her balcony as she says this? This then led to them making their wedding plans. If Romeo had not felt the strong urge, like somehow it was his destiny to stand waiting under her balcony, this would have never happened. Finally, the biggest coincidental situation occurs. An overjoyed and newly married Romeo goes to his friends and happens to show up at the exact time when Tybalt comes looking to duel him. Tybalt says to Romeo’s friends, “Well, peace be with you, sir. Here comes my man.” (3. 1. 57.) It is highly unlikely that both of them would run into each other at this time. The lovers were destined to fall in love and die, and they were of houses that had been cursed by a dying Mercutio. The hurried time span of the story forced all of the events to happen much too quickly for the characters to be able to make reasonable decisions. The numerous times the characters were put into coincidental situations led to a series of events that concluded with the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. For all of these reasons, the blame of who caused the deaths of the star-crossed Romeo and Juliet can be put on no one other than Fate.
