Friar Lawrence Is To Blame In Romeo And Juliet

Is it fair to blame someone or something for the deaths of two people who took their own lives? Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two star-crossed lovers from feuding families. At the end of the play, Prince Escalus wants to punish those responsible for Romeo and Juliet's deaths. While Fate and Friar Lawrence share some blame for the lovers´ deaths, the family is ultimately at fault. Fate is the least to blame. In Doc E Friar Lawrence says ¨ Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice but full of a charge of dear importance, and the neglecting of it may do much danger.¨ Mentioning fate/fortune in this lets us know that Friar Lawrence knew what would happen to Romeo and Juliet and couldn't do anything about it. Fate also led Romeo and Juliet to death. Additionally, everything happens for a reason. Romeo and Juliet were destined to meet and fall in love. Friar Lawrence is the second most to blame. In Doc C, Friar says ¨So smile the heavens upon this holy act... These violent delights have violent ends. And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which as they kiss costumes....” Friar Lawrence is saying that even though they are getting married the act of getting married would end in an unholy way. Several people suggest that Friar Lawrence is the main cause of Romeos and Juliet´s death however I think that it was not completely Friar Lawrence's fault. Families are the most to blame. They are the most to blame because they wanted Juliet to get married. In Doc B, Lady Capulet says ¨The valiant Paris seeks you for his love. What say you? Can you love the gentleman? This night you shall behold him at our feast; speak briefly, can you like of Paris’ love?¨ This quote allows us to see how Lady Capulet is ¨Asking¨ Juliet to marry Paris when it seems she is not asking but demanding her to ¨love¨ Paris.
