Human rights describe and lay out the principles that every human being is entitled to. The very same rights that have been presented to us since 1791 are considered to be crucial to the survival of humanity. In the novel Night however, we see lack of human rights such as the right to be free from cruel or unusual punishment or the right to control what happens to your own body and make medical decisions for yourself. In chapter one of Night Elie wrote “The Hungarian police struck out with truncheons and rifle butts, to right and left, without reason, indiscriminately, their blows falling upon old men and women and children and invalids alike” (13-14).
