Theme: Introduction to the Humanities: The “big questions” of humanity, definitions of culture, the definition of artifacts, reasons for creating artifacts I this theme I learned that humanities involve exploring and the studying humankind, how humans live and encounter and deal with life and document their experiences of life and the aspects of life around them.
We study humanities understand other people better and understand other culture so that we can be better connected and be able to relate to others in a better way. Through humanities, we can find answers to the "big questions” of life. Theme: Fundamentals of Human Culture: Universal or enduring ideas and themes, the impact of culture on artifacts, the role of personal values in understanding artifacts, creator intent, and subjective interpretation In this Module, I learned that artifacts are created as an outlet for ideas and feelings experienced by the artists as an individual or a widespread feeling common to a society and time where the artifact was created in. In universal ideas, the feeling and ideas may transcend the culture of the artifact maker and be relatable to other culture in other parts of the world. These ideas may express love, freedom, environment, and others. Artwork can also be studied using enduring ideas which are big ideas which express the centered on human experience over a long period of time, these may include beauty, conflict, fantasy, work among others. Artifacts are also subject to change as culture changes. As these changes occur the society views and attitude change leading to a change in how artists express ideas. For example, 3D printing technology may change how sculptures are created in the future. we study artifacts from early civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece among other early civilization. The artifacts studied include theater, music, and philosophy. These disciplines were born during that period. other periods are the Middle Ages which are generally 500–1500 which saw the rise of Christianity, The Renaissance, 1400-1700. This also beaming rebirth. artists in this era include the da Vinci and Michelangelo. other periods include Enlightenment and Romanticism which are the period that saw different ideas, the Enlightenment saw the promotion of principles of science, order, balance, and reasoning among other while romanticism promoted the principles of intuition, freedom, and emotions.
