In “Starving for Wisdom” by Nicholas Kristof the author explains the importance of humanities in enriching people and finances. Humanities are learning about “human culture” by the study of literature, history, art and music” (Humanities). Ethos is the “way of convincing your audience of your credibility as a writer” (Modes of Persuasion). Kristof makes a reference to the novel “In Defense of a Liberal Education” by Fareed Zakaria. Zakaria’s novel defends the liberal arts by explaining how this degree creates critical thinkers. Students develop critical thoughts by learning how to write and formulate their own opinions. These skills are utilized in every job. This contributes to Kristof’s authority because it supports his argument and makes the reader believe he is reliable, as he has proof to support his argument. Kristof presented a statement by economist Lawrence Katz. Katz believes employers are searching for employees who have technical and humanities skills. Some decisions may be ethically right, but may not be collectively right for the human culture. A decision that needed to focus on the collective goodness for the population was the decision “last year the president… (made to free) five Taliban leaders to free… Bowe Bergdahl” (Pentagon). This decision was based on what was ethically right to do, because saving a life is what humans believe is the right, however, “at least three of the five Taliban have reconnected with their old network in Afghanistan, which is still killing” (Pentagon) the soldiers from the United States. This decision has endangered the U.S society because some of the Taliban have gone back to harming the U.S. which can lead to war. Influence of too many humanities does not enrich people or finances. Decisions made must be based on a collective of the humanities and information to benefit the entire
