Literature is the mirror of humanity:

“Human nature is potentially aggressive and destructive and potentially orderly and constructive.” (Margaret Mead) Humanity has both the human side and inhuman side. Literature gives readers an overview of human experiences, allowing readers to connect with the natures of humanity. Also, literature represents the diverse nature of mankind. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding illustrates the noble and ignoble sides of humanity through descriptive personification and characterization to create vivid images to describe the major characters of the novel.

The role of Piggy’s character in Lord of the Flies is to represent the noble and the innocent side of humanity. First of all, Piggy represents the adult world, and the initial movement toward that was when Piggy suggests, “Yes! Vote for chief! Let’s vote!” (Golding, 22) the idea of picking a leader. Choosing a leader shows shades of the civilized world and Piggy symbolizes the integrity that the adult world possesses. Secondly, Piggy acts as the peacemaker to settle issues between Ralph and Jack. Near the end of the book, Jack takes over his hunter group and forms his own group where Jack is the leader. Jack’s tribe acts ruthless toward Ralph’s group and shows cruelty. However, Piggy shows bravery and tries to get the boys back together, but in the process, the barbarous Roger throws a big rock at Piggy. For which Piggy dies in a noble way. Piggy trying to solve the issue without violence shows the noble side of mankind. Finally, Piggy is the voice of reason because of the intelligence he posses. As the boys were becoming more savage Piggy said to them, “Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” (Golding, 203). Piggy is what symbolizes order and integrity of civilization. When the boys were becoming savages, Piggy tried to be the voice of reason and knock some sense into them. Golding portrays Ralph’s diverse nature to show that mankind is made of both positive and negative qualities. Throughout Lord of the Flies, Jack represented the savage nature of humans and Piggy the intellectual side of humanity. That’s where Ralph comes in and represents both worlds. At the start, Ralph was picked as the leader because he was the one that gathered the boys together. Also, Ralph showed power in a positive way that earned him the position of leader. Ralph was very smart regarding maintaining order throughout the other boys which shows the noble side of Ralph. However, Ralph gave into the temptation of natural human nature and joined in with the killing of Simon which shows the ignoble side of mankind. In the story, Golding put a particularly curious quote that revealed the truth regarding human nature. The quote is, “You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’am the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?” (Golding, 143). The message that the quote is presenting is that how humans have evil inside them and humans have both the good and bad qualities.
